Statement of Need and Program Overview

Bipolar disorder and other related psychiatric conditions (i.e., schizophrenia) are debilitating illnesses that affect individuals across all ages.  Specific diagnostic and treatment challenges exist in children and adolescents with these psychiatric conditions.  Diagnostically, these conditions may pose greater treatment challenges as they are often associated with other psychiatric comorbidities, severe disease, and treatment resistance.  Considering the potential lifelong disability associated with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, it is essential to perform a thorough diagnostic evaluation.  Treatment of these conditions often involves a multi-modal approach including psychoeducation, family and supportive psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy (i.e., mood stabilizers, antipsychotics).  This series of CME symposia Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia in Children & Adolescents:  Diagnostic and Treatment Issues, chaired by Karen D. Wagner, MD, PhD (Director, Childhood and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston) will discuss advances in diagnostic (i.e., neuroimaging) and clinical issues, as well as review the extant literature and recommendations for pharmacotherapy and its optimal use (including minimizing complications) in these patients.  Finally, challenging patient cases will be presented to emphasize key learning objectives and to share the emerging treatment paradigms based on the clinical expertise of leading pediatric and adolescent psychiatrists in the field.

Target Audience

Psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, and other mental healthcare professionals involved in childhood and adolescent psychiatry.

Learning Objectives

After attending this presentation, the attendee should be able to:

          •    Describe the neuropharmacologic basis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as related to current
             and novel drug therapies;

        •    Summarize the multi-modality approach to treating childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder
             and schizophrenia;

        •    Identify clinical treatment options for childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder taking into account
             symptom presentation, presence of comorbid diagnosis, drug efficacy, adverse effects, drug-drug
             interactions, and data from current clinical studies;

        •    Discuss the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of early-onset schizophrenia-spectrum
             (EOSS) disorders;

        •    Integrate and summarize existing guidelines in optimizing pharmacotherapy, including monitoring
             and treating for potential complications.
